It is sometimes presumed that when one is happy, something bad will follow says Dr Schomer. He argues that some cultures have a distorted perception when it comes to happiness.
Talking to Redi Tlabi, Dr Schomer looked at some of the beliefs that make people fear being happy and associate happiness to something that undermines them.
