The Gauteng Department of Health will today officially implement the electronic Bed Management System (eBMS) which is aimed at creating a seamless referral and management of patients across the province.
Qedani Mahlangu, Gauteng Health MEC explains this new groundbreaking system to 702's John Robbie.
She says Gauteng Province has more than 17 000 hospital beds. But before the implementation of this system, it was hard to keep track when and where beds were becoming vacant.
What the system does now, as the patient vacates the bed, it is loaded in the system, and people at the accident and emergency are then able to know.— Qedani Mahlangu, Gauteng Health MEC
It also assists in hospital that are very overcrowded, to be able to refer patients to another facility where beds are available.
In the past, the EMS workers had to rely on paperwork, but now they are informed via this electronic system where ambulances should take patients.
Currently the system is only in operation in the public hospitals.
