South Africa has the sixth highest number of shopping malls in the world, far exceeding those of our developing country counterparts.

702's Azania Mosaka spoke to Dirk Prinsloo from Urban Studies about the issue.

Listen to the interview below:

The Mall of Africa it is 131 000 sqm, so it is the biggest mall to open on day one at that level. The planning started around 2011/12.

Dirk Prinsloo, managing member of Urban Studies

There's a strong drive from international brands that are very interested in South Africa. There are a number of international retailers that have identified South Africa as an important and popular retail destination.

Dirk Prinsloo, managing member of Urban Studies

We're the sixth largest in the world as far as number of shopping centres are concerned. We are just behind the US, Japan, Canada, the UK, China and then South Africa.

Dirk Prinsloo, managing manager of Urban Studies

We sit with increased urbanisation. At the moment, we are 64% urbanised, and this will continue growing. The LSM middle market is growing and the population is earning more in terms of disposable income.
