What are the challenges facing free government housing in SA?

Has the the time come for government to revise their model on free government housing to make it a more sustainable programme?

702/Cape Talk's Redi Tlhabi gave listeners an opportunity to share their thoughts regarding the various challenges facing the issue on the #OpenLine.

Listen to the conversation below:

We will never ever be able to catch up with the housing backlog. There are houses that are built halfway and then registered as finished and occupied houses.

Solly, caller in Pretoria

We've got a government with no direction. A lot of people are coming from rural areas looking for jobs. I stay in Katlehong and we have people from Mozambique and Zimbabwe who have RDPs.

George, caller in Boksburg

I can tell you that looking into my neighbourhood, it has made a difference. People are growing their RDPs and it looks much better than when we had shacks.

Penny, caller in Ekurhuleni

Government needs to monitor who stays in the houses. What happens is people get the RDPs, they leave after a couple of years and rent the houses out while they own other properties.

Mandla, caller in KwaThema

The model of free housing has to keep changing because you're sitting with free housing that keeps getting more expensive. There needs to be accountability from the beneficiaries to help build the houses.

S'thembiso, caller in Sandton
