Have you made a Facebook call yet?

There are about 12 million South Africans that use Facebook every month.

Besides posting updates and sharing pictures and stories via their news feed, they can also post direct message via the Messenger app.

In 2014, Facebook made video and voice calling available for users which lowered the cost to keep in touch with friends and family that were far away.

You could also create groups so people could share messages to specific groups to plan a work project or plan a party of road trip.

In April the option to create group calls was added allowing you to make a conference call to up to 50 people.

Use the phone or video icon to call anyone you know on Facebook.

You may not get to say much with such a big group but certainly a group call to wish someone a happy birthday or a family meet-up for those living all over the country could be a great option.

The option for group video calling will no doubt be on its way.

To connect with someone on Messenger you only need to be friends with them on Facebook, so knowing what your phone number is or where in the world you are does not matter.

You can also use the Messenger app via you PC at www.messenger.com (although you can't make group calls yet, you can make direct video and voice calls)

Facebook is not the only voice calling option though. The original was Skype and while it still works just as well and offers group voice and video calls, there are fewer people using it, so you may not be able to connect with as many people as Facebook.

WhatsApp is another very popular app that besides being one of the most popular text messaging options, it also allows very good voice calls.

You would be forgiven for wondering why you might ever need to make a regular phone call, which is why phone companies are not all very happy with what Facebook and Facebook owned WhatsApp are doing.
