MMC Matshidiso Mfikoe says they did respond to the Zandspruit protests

Member of the Mayoral Committee in the City of Johannesburg, Matshidiso Mfikoe says the City have told leadership in the Zandspruit that the area will be electrified during the 2016/2017 financial year.

Zandspruit residents have been protesting for better service delivery, especially housing and electricity. Some say they have not had electricity since 1994.

Mfikoe told Xolani Gwala that the leadership in the community might not be communicating the information to community members.

In the City we have never had a programme that says we will electrify informal settlements until last year.

Matshidiso Mfikoe, Member of the Mayoral Committee in the City of Johannesburg

We have communicated with the leadership that we will start electrifying the area in the financial year 2016/2017. The issue here is, have the community leadership passed that information to the public. I have realised that there is no communication that goes down.

Matshidiso Mfikoe, Member of the Mayoral Committee in the City of Johannesburg

The mayor has delegated MMCs to do some of his responsibilities for him. I'm responsible for electricity, water and waste. The most unfortunate part is some people in Zandspruit felt that they didn't want me to come take their memorandum.

Matshidiso Mfikoe, Member of the Mayoral Committee in the City of Johannesburg
