Mbalula whips national cricket, rugby, netball and athletics over transformation

Minister of Sport, Fikile Mbalula, has revoked the privileges of national athletics, cricket, netball and rugby from bidding for international tournaments due to lack of transformation.

702's Azania Mosaka spoke EWN sports reporter, Mark Lewis, to regarding the issue.

Listen to the interview below:

It seems like they didn't know it was going to happen. The fact is he has gone on to revoke their privileges from hosting international events.

Mark Lewis, EWN sports reporter

It is a very big statement from the minister to show that they are taking transformation very seriously and this now is going be the beginning of a very hard hand from government.

Mark Lewis, EWN sports reporter

This is also about the coaching staff and behind the scenes people, it's not only about the athletes.

Mark Lewis, EWN sports reporter

Talks of transformation have been ongoing for an extended period between the minister and leaders of various sporting codes.

There are going to be massive repercussions, and it will put a lot of the sporting codes under serious pressure now to make sure that they no longer find themselves in this position.

Mark Lewis, EWN sports reporter

This is just one of the many options the minister had at his disposal. The minister could have gone as far as terminating the relationship between the federations and the Department of Sports and Recreation. Now that would be the extreme scenario.
