What are the reasons behind the Mbeki nostalgia among South Africans?

Former President Thabo Mbeki's return to engaging in matters of national public discourse after a lengthy silence has been received with mixed reaction.

It's not about the fact that President Zuma is performing poorly. There was an economic meltdown but South Africa did very well at the time. He was a president I was proud of and there was confidence about where we were going.
