"Bring on our robot overlords" - driverless cars are probably here to stay

According to Jan Vermeulen, senior journalist at MyBroadband, driverless car technology will eventually come to South Africa, whether the country is ready for it or not.

Vermeulen spoke to #NightTalk's Sizwe Dhlomo after Dubai's Emir Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced that 25 percent of all car trips in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) city should be driverless by the year 2030.

Describing concerns about the safety of driverless cars, Vermeulen says if you remove the human error in driving, there would be far fewer car accidents.

Despite there being public concern about the safety of driverless cars, tests commissioned by Google which were conducted by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute show that driverless cars are safer than human-driven cars.
