The world is getting fatter (and fatter)

We are getting much fatter globally and in particular in middle income countries like South Africa, and the main reason is because the food environment is changing extremely rapidly.

Professor David Sanders, Head of the School of Public Health at UWC

People are eating far too much highly processed foods bought in supermarkets.

High levels of highly refined carbohydrates are the mainstay of most people's diets which means a very high sugar content diet.

Sanders says government need to intervene. The proposed sugar tax is not going to be enough.

South Africa imports huge amounts of refined foods, and Sanders says government needs to regulate this.

On the one hand we have a health policy around obesity, but on the other hand we have a trade policy that welcomes direct foreign investment and imports that bring in these fast food chains and highly refined foods
