No guarantee that there won't be load shedding this weekend - Eskom

Eskom confirmed on Friday that stage one load shedding will take place from 11am to 10pm.

Speaking to Ray White on 702, Senior General Manager at Eskom Andrew Etzinger explained that the power utility has 9000 MW of generation capacity which is out of service due to technical problems.

Unfortunately this morning more than 2000 MW, which is a significant amount of capacity - about 5% of our capacity, went out of service and technical problems arose and that was too much for us to handle.

Eskom Senior General Manager, Andrew Etzinger

Etzinger added that the power stations need to be taken out of service for long periods of time so that they can be serviced, but in order for this to be done the national power utility will need to bring new power stations online.

While some work was done on the power stations over the Christmas period, the amount of maintenance that needs to be conducted remains quite substantial.

Etzinger could not promise that there would be no load-shedding this weekend.
