Big plans ahead for Midrand as Mall of Africa opens

The opening of the Mall of Africa might put Midrand in a strategic position for developing public transport trends.

The new shopping mall, situated off the Allandale offramp, is South Africa's biggest mall that was ever built in a single phase.

702's John Robbie spoke to public transport analyst, Paul Browning, about the implications of the new development.

There are those who are asking if we need more vast shopping malls but I'm sure it will be successful.

There's no real sign of a transit oriented development which encourages and provides for public transport to discourage the use of a private car.

The challenge there is that taxis tend to do their own thing and there are shopping malls where the management has made great efforts to accommodate taxis in an orderly fashion.
