Has the law let women down in addressing rape on SA campuses?

Female students who protested naked, after publishing the names of their alleged rapists, have highlighted the scourge of rape culture.

The #RUReferenceList protesters held protests at Rhodes University and University of Witwatersrand.

702/Cape Talk's #FridayStandIn, Lovelyn Nwadeyi, spoke to Lisa Vetten and Fezokuhle Mthonti about the issue.

Listen to the conversation below:

Rape culture refers to the kinds of social and cultural support that enable and excuse rape.

Lisa Vetten, Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research

It can be a bit of a limiting term of focusing our attention on rape, when there's a much broader spectrum and range of sexually oppressive and coercive behaviours that go on which are nonetheless still wrong.

Lisa Vetten, Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research

There's been an ongoing struggle to get Rhodes to attend to these complaints and it had been unsatisfactory.

Lisa Vetten, Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research

The 1994 moment didn't heal us. There's a really deep and problematic undercurrent of violence against women.

Fezokuhle Mthonti, Rhodes University student activist

Part of the real horror of being at Rhodes University is a system of whiteness as a system. I'm not talking about white people.
