Analysts react to Zuma judgement - 'He is a corruption accused'

News 24 editor Adriaan Basson worked on the stories around Zuma's corruption charges and those against South African businessman Schabir Shaik back in 2004.

He says today's High Court judgement will certainly bring all this back into play.

Basson summarised the two charges against Shaik.

One was around Shaik soliciting a bribe of R500 000 from French arms company Thompson CSF.

The other charge was around the series of 783 payments to the tune of R4 million, that Shaik paid to and on behalf of Jacob Zuma and his family for their expenses.

Basson says it had become clear that Shaik had bought Zuma as a politician and Zuma had helped open doors to investors for the businessman.

All the dockets are now with the Hawks. Jacob Zuma, is says Basson, a corruption accused.

Political Analyst, Professor Lesiba Tefu from Unisa told Stephen Grootes that this has weakened Jacob Zuma.

He has been weakened. Almost every day he is in this unenviable position...where he has conducted himself in a manner no honourable for a head of state.

It will strengthen the opposition, and those within the party who think he should step down.

Professor Lesiba Tefu, Political Analyst, Unisa

For me it is no longer about whether Jacob Zuma can survive this, it is about whether the ANC can. And it is doing them irreparable damage.
