Can parents be jealous of their own children?

In a normal and healthy household most parents are proud of their children and want them to succeed in life, according to Dr Helgo Schomer.

But, he says, there are parents who are jealous of their children. It could be a mother who is jealous of her daughter’s looks or a father becoming jealous of his son’s achievements.

When there is narcissism involved, then the attention moves away from mother and father, and the child becomes the centre of their attention and when there is no balance the child can suffer retaliation

Jealousy is particularly difficult emotion in a narcissistic, not balanced family

Dr Helgo Schomer, resident psychologist

Dr Schomer says the most commonly reported problem is of mother becoming jealous of daughter’s relationship with the father.

This can cause some strain in the family if there is no reasonable talk of what is happening

Dr Helgo Schomer, resident psychologist

Please parents be as generous as possible, see that you yourself are balanced and the likelihood of you raising balanced children will be so much better.
