Talking sex with Dr Eve: Dealing with menopause

Every woman’s experience of the menopause is different. It's a process whereby oestrogen and progesterone levels begin to decrease and it does have physical and psychological side effects for women.

It can also quite a secretive issue, with many women not being comfortable talking about their experiences.

Dr Eve says shines light on this topic and encourages women to talk about their concerns surrounding menopause, and in particular how it effects their sexuality.

There's a silence that happens with menopause, because it's about ageing and we're so ashamed of it, and we really don't address this sufficiently well.

Dr Eve, sexologist

Sexologist Dr Eve encourages women to look at menopause and talk about it.

Dr Eve says that Menopause is euphemistically called “a change of life”. That can sound exciting and something to look forward.

Like a holiday. A much needed break from the onslaught of bearing and raising children . A time to pause and make choices unavailable to you when you were a younger career climbing woman or full time mom or both.

When you look at younger and older women, you see it so vividly, the difference that oestrogen makes.

Dr Eve, sexologist

Dr Eve also looks at illnesses like cancer that effect women of all ages. treatment of these illnesses removes oestrogen and brings on menopause.

This is incredibly traumatic for those women who are only 25, 35 or 45 years old, and go into instant menopause.

Dr Eve, sexologist

But for women entering menopause naturally, the side effects of hot flushes, sleeplessness, mood disorders, brittle bones and hair and a dry vagina, are devastating and effect one's sex life and life in general.

One listener sent a text "I', 46, recently menopausal, and devastated by what is happening to me.

Dr Eve implores women who are suffering to go see their gynaecologist and to go into therapy. There is help out there, and women do not need to suffer through it.

It is understandable, it is a grieving process. But it is so individual. It is recognised globally that women need to have unique consultations and assessments. There is no one cookie cutter solution for all women.
