First witness at Riah Phiyega inquiry testifies about Marikana shooting orders

Evidence leaders have called their first witness to testify at the inquiry into Riah Phiyega’s fitness to hold office.

Known as the Claasen Board of Inquiry, the aim is to determine if the suspended national police commissioner misled the Farlam Commission about her involvement in the 2012 Marikana mass shooting.

Captain Monwabisi Ntlathi is the first witness and was part of the tactical response team.

EWN reporter Gia Nicolaides says Ntlathi explained the orders given to the tactical team on the day of the massacre.

He was saying that they were told by the National Police management that they need to go in there, disarm and disperse the armed protesters.

Judge Neels Claassen has allowed new witnesses to testify in the inquiry and ruled that submissions from those who had testified in the Farlam Commission would be valid testimony in the inquiry.

As many as 14 witnesses are expected to testify in the inquiry into Riah Phiyega’s fitness to hold office.
