Key players meet over Vuwani protests, torched schools

A collective of Limpopo MECs have meet with traditional leaders, chiefs and education officials, to discuss the Vuwani protests which have left 17 Limpopo schools torched and a total of 50 shut down.

The meeting is underway at Vhembe District Municipality council chambers in Thohoyandou to try and put an end to the demonstrations, which escalated on Monday.

EWN's Govan Whittles says that district officials have planned to go into the villages to speak with residents over the next four days.

According to Whittles, municipal authorities are assessing the damage in the village after protesters burned down the schools, blockaded the roads and stoned several vehicles.

17 schools have been torched, a tribal office has been burned down, four municipal trucks attacked and a police trailer vandalised.

Vuwani residents want the Municipal Demarcation Board to reverse the decision to remove them from the Makhado Municipality and include them in a new municipality.

Limpopo education spokesperson Dr Naledzani Rasila says Vuwani remains a no-go area.

Rasila says that the arson attacks have caused a major setback for the education department.
