Black Lawyers Association: Judges should be alive to the situation around them

Black Lawyers Association President Lutendo Sigogo says that Judge Mabel Jansen was prejudiced and not impartial when she made comments on Facebook that rape is part of black culture.

The High Court judge has been criticised for her views after a conversation she had on the social network was made public.

On #NightTalk, Gugs Mhlungu and Sizwe Dhlomo spoke to Sigogo about the qualities of a good judge, and the possible legal ramifications of Judge Jansen's comments.

Listen to the conversation below:

We know what is required of a good judge. The person should be alive to the situation around him or her. The person should have moral standards which are acceptable around him or her. The person should be responsible

Lutendo Sigogo, Black Lawyers Association President

When you're going out there to judge, you must not be influenced by any other thing which is outside the law and the facts that are before the court

Lutendo Sigogo, Black Lawyers Association President

She is prejudiced and not impartial in the statements that rape culture is synonymous with black men
