Jansen 'meant every word' of her Facebook posts, says irked black lawyers group

The Black Lawyers Association (BLA) does not believe that High Court Judge Mabel Jansen's allegedly racist comments were taken out of context.

Social justice activist Gillian Schutte posted screen grabs of a conversation online, wherein Jansen expresses her views that rape is a part of black culture in South Africa.

It is alleged that Jansen's Facebook comments have been reported to the Judicial Services Commission (JSC), which has been called on to investigate the matter.

BLA President Lutendo Sigogo says that the group will join other organisations and lay formal charges at the JSC.

Taking into account what Gillian says herself; she also believes that that is what [Jansen] meant. We are saying the JSC must investigate this to find out if it is out of context. But we believe she meant every word of what she said.

Lutendo Sigogo, BLA President

Sigogo explains that the group wants Jansen to resign, or for her to be impeached through legal processes.

He says that Jansen's comments are only the tip of the iceberg, amid growing racial micro-aggressions and prejudices surfacing in the media.
