The evolving roles and identities of mothers in the modern world

Dr Eve gives a traditional definition of a mother as “a woman in relation to a child or children, to whom she has given birth”

But she says the meaning and duties of being a mother have changed dramatically over the years.

Modern mothers are not women; modern mothers do not always give birth to children. They get surrogates to bear them and grow them and they call themselves mothers.

The modern mother gets married and has children at a much older age. These are women who are deliberately, strategically planning to give birth much later in life, even in their late 30’s and 40’s
