Heavy police presence at VUT after buildings torched amid protests

Police are on high alert at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), following overnight violence in which a number of buildings were set alight.

It is alleged that the torching of building's is linked to the university's suspension of students for provoking violence on campus.

EWN's Ziyanda Ngcobo explains that students began protesting on Monday, lamenting poor safety on campus and demanding the removal of a security company.

Students had their belongings stolen, apparently by people who aren't even VUT students... They've been asking management to hire a different security company.

Students suspect that the current private security company, Mafoko, is colluding with outside criminals to steal their belongings.

They claim that their laptops always get stolen and that people from outside campus always have access.
