Eskom's downward spiral:
Eskom's lack of forecasting sees it in a downward spiral, which has led to the current energy crisis, as Wits University scenario planner Koffi Kouakou attests:
You want to draw a map of uncertainty that you can navigate because you can never get rid completely of uncertainties and risk. So you tend to find different scenarios - ways in which the future can unfold - by which you can make you decisions better and to manage risks in a way that it’s favourable for you. In the case of Eskom, what we’ve got is a downward spiral and it’s beyond the issue of darkness and light, but more on the broader energy provision and maintenance for the whole of South Africa and hopefully with the Deputy President being involved, we’ll be out of the woods.
What can Ramaphosa do for Eskom?
EWN Senior Correspondent Gia Nicolaides on this story: there is still no indication of government's Eskom plans and no announcement as yet on its plan of action to help Eskom financially. While Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa visited Eskom's headquarters in Johannesburg on Thursday ahead of Eskom CEO Tshediso Matona's media briefing, there's still no clear indication of how government will help the utility keep the lights on in the near future. Matona's briefing noted the current state of the power system, with him saying that extensive maintenance work is needed to secure electricity supply. This means regular load shedding for at least the next three months. Additionally, Eskom is expected to run out of funds by mid-February.
Consultation continues to find funding solution for e-tolls infrastructure:
Following the release of Gauteng's e-toll review panel report by Premier David Makhura, the province's government is in talks with local and national government to find a hybrid funding model for the e-tolls infrastructure which may include higher motor vehicle licence fees, turning off certain gantries, increasing off-peak discounts and introducing time-of-day exemptions. Chairman of the Opposition for Urban Tolling Alliance (Outa) Wayne Duvenage, is meanwhile not convinced:
In their hybrid model or multiple channel funding model, e-tolling still remains prominent, so do you make it work then? As that's the biggest concern. It's pretty much a half-pregnant situation that we don't believe is going to work at all.
