NPA boss to appeal reinstatement of Zuma 'spy tapes' charges

National Prosecutions Authority (NPA) boss Shaun Abrahams has announced that they will appeal the decision which set aside the withdrawal of criminal charges against President Jacob Zuma.

Last month, the Pretoria High Court ruled that the 2009 decision to withdraw fraud and corruption charges against Zuma was irrational.

Abrahams says that the ruling has serious implications for the powers of the NPA.

There's considerable public interest at stake herein, and the issues are of great Constitutional import.

According to EWN's Barry Bateman, Abrahams says the decision by the court affects the legally protected discretion of prosecutors, to decide whether to prosecute or not.

Abrahams says the ruling will have wide and far-reaching consequences to prosecutors going into the future. And it's on this basis that they are appealing.
