Yasmin Sooka: Truth and Reconciliation Commission 20 years on

Pippa Green interviews former TRC Commissioner Yasmin Sooka as part of the 13 part series History For The Future

This year, South Africa marks 20 years since the start of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings. John Maytham spoke to Yasmin Sooka, former Commissioner at the TRC.

Sooka has been following closely the case of Hissène Habré, 'the dictator of Chad'. Habré was sentenced to life in prison earlier this week by the Extraordinary African Chambers (CAE) for crimes against humanity, war crimes and torture.

Sooka says the sentencing of Habré is a triumph for justice and accountability for the victims of human rights violation and crimes against humanity on our continent.

This is the first trial that is conducted by an African court under a special resolution of the African Union ... and i think this is a moment in history
