Government's plan to make South Africa's towns and cities more inclusive

Urbanisation is irreversable, and municipalities should not be allowed to suffer in managing this process.

This is according to Andries Nel, Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, who spoke to #NightTalk's Gugs Mhlungu and Sizwe Dhlomo about the aims of government's Integrated Urban Development Framework (IUDF).

The IUDF is government's guide to implement a more sustainable model for inclusive and livable towns and cities in the country.

Listen to the conversation below:

By 2050, eight out of every ten South Africans will be living in an urban area

Andries Nel, Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs

We need to lay a very solid foundation, so that we have very clear spatial planning in place and we continue to implement programmes to strengthen the capacities of our municipalities to manage urbanisation

Andries Nel, Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs

There is an inextricable link between our urban areas and our rural areas because of the legacy of apartheid. We need to speak about urban and rural development not as opposites, but as complimentary strategies

Andries Nel, Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs

We can have cities that are more compact, more connected, more coordinated, and that are based on the principles of spatial justice, spatial quality, spatial sustainability, spatial resilience and spatial efficiency
