Tripartite Alliance divided over state capture probe

The unity of the Tripartite Alliance has come into question after the South African Communist Party (SACP) criticised the African National Congress (ANC) for its decision to close the internal investigation into state capture.

SACP Second Deputy General Secretary Solly Mapaila called the decision a "complete whitewash", adding that investigative process lacked integrity.

He says the SACP had called for a full judicial commission, citing the lack of investigative powers of the governing party.

Meanwhile, Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) President Sdumo Dlamini has recognised the initiative by the ANC.

The process has come and gone, we should support the decision of the ANC, as it has concluded the matter.

Political analyst Ralph Mathekga says that SACP has become more critical of the ANC, while Cosatu remains neutral.

He says tensions between the Tripartite Alliance range further than the recent state capture controversy.
