The Arms Deal: where politics and big money collaborate harmoniously

According to former African National Congress politician, Andrew Feinstein, dirty politics, state machinery and billions of dollars are what the global arms trade is made of.

He travelled to South Africa to testify at the Seriti Commission, but ended up never giving evidence at the inquiry into the multi-billion rand military acquisition saga.

Feinstein's book (now turned into a film), Shadow World, delves into the dirty politics of the global arms trade.

702/Cape Talk's Redi Tlhabi spoke to a former ANC member of parliament and author, Andrew Feinstein, regarding the issue.

Feinstein says investigating the machinations involved in these deals is not easy, but the results are worthwhile.

Convicted fraudster and former adviser to President Jacob Zuma, Shabir Shaik, was found guilty for soliciting a bribe. ANC member of parliament, Tony Yengeni, and Shabir's brother, 'Chippy', Shaik were all fingered in benefitting from the notorious deal, recounts Feinstein.

The reality is a vast majority of arms deals are inherently corrupt... This really is the fulcrum of global corruption.

The Arms Deal was the point at which in the ANC, it became acceptable to use state contract for personal gain but also for party political gain.
