Random Acts of Kindness with Dis-Chem

Diepsloot centre for violence and abuse receives Dis-Chem Random Act of Kindness

Brown Lekekela is the man behind the Green Door Centre in Diepsloot, a community north of Johannesburg in dire need of services.

The centre offers help to victims of domestic violence, rape and sexual abuse.

It was launched during the 16 Days of Activism campaign in 2013.

Lekekela runs the centre from the backyard of his own home so that it can be as close to the community as possible.

Their busiest times are evenings when darkness falls over Diepsloot and social ills rear their head.

He says the centre does not have a sponsor and struggles to get all the things they need to run it effectively.

Penny Stein from the Dis-Chem Foundation has stepped in.

She says they are moved by Brown's inspirational work, and in particular how caring he is about women's welfare.

She says the centre, like other sexual abuse centres nationwide, sadly has a great need for comfort kits. These kits are put together for victims of rape and sexual abuse, and contain about 12 essential items women need in these critical moments.

We are going to supply Brown for the next year, 60 kits a month, which will help 60 women a month. And the value of that is R120 000 over the year.

Stein says the Dis-Chem Foundation will also be looking to help the centre in other ways too.

When John Robbie and the Breakfast Show team visited the centre recently, one of the biggest needs identified was a toilet. Someone has kindly donated a portable toilet and John Robbie is asking 702 listeners for help to transport the toilet to the centre.
