EC govt to probe after PE Mayor Danny Jordaan flouted appointment procedure

Eastern Cape Provincial government is now investigating allegations that Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Danny Jordaan had appointed a new head of safety and security without following proper procedure.

EWN's Siyabonga Sesant says that Linda Mti was appointed the metro's new head of safety and security last month.

Sesant explains that the Municipal Systems Act requires municipalities to inform the provincial cooperative governance department about pending appointments.

According to Sesant, cooperative governance officials in the department confirmed that they had not received the necessary documentation.

In essence, it means Mayor Jordaan contravened the law, because those documents should have been sent in 14 days ago - it's been a month now.

Meanwhile, municipal officials deny claims that the documents were not sent to the provincial department.

Mti has been criticised by the opposition in Nelson Mandela Bay for his criminal record and his implication in an ongoing fraud and corruption investigation.
