The missing link in the fight against drugs and finding affordable treatment

Gauteng MEC of Social Development, Nandi Manyathula-Khoza and Cathy Karassellos, clinical psychologist, Cape Town Drug Counselling Centre join Redi Tlhabi for round two of a discussion on how to overcome the drug crisis in South Africa.

Private drug rehabilitation programmes are expensive. For many South Africans from less affluent communities, where drug problems are prevalent, these facilities are out of reach.

Tlhabi and her guests looked at this discrepancy between those who can and those who cannot afford to send family members for such treatment.

They looked at the issue of availability and access to drug centres, and many callers phoned in asking for advice and help on how to find help for loved ones with drug problems.

Drug treatment programmes are highly specialised and need to be professionally run. State drug rehab facilities are free, but waiting lists are long.
