Concerns over accident prone road at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University

A series of hit and run accidents on the main road outside the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) campus has led to protests at the university.

Students are calling for authorities to implement traffic calming measures on Molotlegi Road, to prevent further accidents involving pedestrians.

On Tuesday, a visitor to SMU was seriously injured after being knocked over by a taxi in a hit and run incident. In March, a medical student died after being by a bus on Molotlegi Road in another hit and run incident.

SMU vice-chancellor Professor Chris de Beer and SRC Deputy President Ernest Mametsa spoke to #NightTalk's Gugs Mhlungu and Sizwe Dhlomo.

Listen to the conversation below:

Students have been talking to management about safety (on Molotlegi Road), with no resolution, hence the protest

What sparked the protests is that another visitor to the university was also hit by a taxi yesterday (Tuesday), and was seriously injured

Professor Chris de Beer, vice-chancellor of Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University

The Metro says it will start immediately with measures which include installing temporary speed bumps. In the long-term, the Metro says it will install a traffic light (on Molotlegi Road), which the university will ensure is constructed
