The Friday Stand-In 2016

Cultural activist Neo Muyanga talks African languages, protest music and dance

South African composer, musician and cultural activist, Neo Muyanga, returned to his radio roots for his #FridayStandIn show. Muyanga is not new to the station, he was a reporter for Eyewitness News between 1994 and 1996. After putting on his headphones, it was clear that he felt right at home. See Facebook gallery below.

During #OpenLine, callers shared their concerns about striking South African firefighters who were deployed to Canada to assist relief operations. Click here to read the story.

Muyanga, spoke to the Standard Bank Young Artist Award winner, Themba Mbuli, about his new show, grandmothers, colonialism and Miriam Makeba. Callers also phoned in talking about their 'sheroes' and heroes.

Muyanga looked at the issue of indigenous languages, that are about to be lost as they become extinct with linguists, Sheena Shah and Prof Matthias Brenzinger.

Even though, Muyanga says 'it was frighteningly complicated', he managed to entertain and education listeners.
