Unclear whether Henri Van Breda handed himself in out of his own free will

Henri van Breda reported to the Stellenbosch police station on Monday, nearly 18 months after three members of his family were axed to death in their luxury De Zalze Golf Estate home.

EWN reporter Giovanna Gerbi says that it remains unclear whether he handed himself in voluntarily, or if he was threatened with arrest.

There's a little bit of ambiguity. The police may have said that we'll arrest you or you hand yourself over.

Local news organisation Eikestadnuus Stellenbosch released video footage of the 21-year-old suspect entering the police station with his attorney in the afternoon.

According to Gerbi, Van Breda spent the night in the holding cells at the police station.

She said that court proceedings will reveal whether he will apply for bail or remain in police custody.
