Mbuyisa Makhubu: a hero and activist or a display of humanity?

In a podcast series titled 'Through the cracks - the untold story of Mbuyisa Makhubu' by EWN's Mandy Wiener, Ntsiki Makhubu shares memories of her brother.

702/Cape Talk's Redi Tlhabi spoke to the only remaining member of the family, his sister Ntsiki Makhubu, about how the family has found closure since their loss.

Their father, Mbuso, left for Botswana in 1963, as an Mkhonto we Sizwe (MK) operative. The family was notified of his death by a neighbour in 1973. Her youngest brother and Mkhonto we Sizwe member, Ntando, died in 1999. Their mother, Nombuso, died in 2002 with the belief that Mbuyisa was still alive and suffering from some kind of mental illness.

Listen to the conversation below:

It doesn't get easier for the fact that we still don't know where he is or where he ended up in 40 years.

Ntsiki said the 1976 Soweto Student Uprisings changed Mbuyisa. He became a recluse and stopped eating or sleeping.

Mbuyisa changed from the day of June 16 until the time he left in August. I lost my brother while he was still in the country.

After fleeing to Botswana, Mbuyisa ended up in Nigeria where he disappeared. The last letter he wrote to his mother was in 1978 where he expressed his unhappiness and yearning to return home.
