Barry Steenkamp would self-harm when he thought of his daughter's suffering

In emotional testimony, Reeva Steenkamp’s father Barry Steenkamp told the High Court in Pretoria that he still thinks of Reeva every day and has struggled severely with the loss.

The teary father told the courts that her death has completely broken the Steenkamp family, reports Gia Nicolaides.

Steenkamp, the first witness to be called by the State, detailed how the family had been financially and emotionally dependent on the deceased.

He told the court that he has not yet forgiven Oscar Pistorius for murdering Reeva, and that the man should pay for his crime.

He says that he visualises the crime scene and imagines the fear and pain his daughter suffered, before she died.

She must have been in so much fear and pain, that is what I think about all the time. It must have been utterly awful.

Barry Steenkamp

I don't know if I was going mental or whatever, but I used to take my fist and hit it up against the walls with my knuckles.

Barry told the court that the tragic thoughts, had at times in the past, led him to self-harm.

I used to take [my diabetes injection] and shove the needle and turn into my stomach and arms to see if I could feel the same sort or pain - but no.

Meanwhile, prison nurse Charlotte Mashabane has taken the stand to testify about Pistorius's violent tantrums during his imprisonment.
