SA schools face education overhaul with 3-stream system in 2017

A 3-stream education system will be introduced to South African schools in accordance with the objectives of the National Development Plan.

The changes, which will be piloted in 58 schools in 2017, are aimed at equipping learners with requisite skills to enter the employment market after completing matric.

The streams will be divided as follows:

  • academic
  • technical operational
  • technical vocational

702's Azania Mosaka spoke to Director General of the Department of Basic Education, Mathanzima Mweli, about how the department intends to reach these objectives.

Listen to the conversation below:

The way we have structured our curriculum... you will be able to determine whether they will perform better in the academic stream, the vocational stream, or the occupational stream.

Mathanzima Mweli, Department of Basic Education DG

Historically, vocational education has been projected as the offering for the less gifted.

Mweli says the project will see the start of offering far more opportunities for vocational and technical training, which he says is the direction South Africa needs to move towards.
