SA's psyche still needs to heal from the past, says psychiatric expert

South Africa needs to find ways to heal its psyche in the aftermath of Apartheid atrocities.

40 years after the 1976 Soweto Uprising, psychiatric expert Dr Bernard Janse van Rensburg says that iconic photographs (such as that of Hector Pieterson's lifeless body) still trigger the collective trauma of the nation.

According to van Rensburg, the student protests that have gripped the country in recent months indicate that there are still unresolved issues with the "born free" generation.

There's almost this question of unfinished business.

He says that there needs to be social solutions to prevent clinical disorders among the youth.
