Matthews' exit calls for SABC to hit the panic button - Media Monitoring Africa

Lobby group Media Monitoring Africa has welcomed the resignation of Jimi Matthews as acting CEO at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).

I think we need to see it as a call for the SABC board to hit the panic button and.. find their back bone and stand up.

William Bird, Executive Director of Media Monitoring Africa

Matthews tweeted a picture of his resignation letter, citing a "corrosive atmosphere" in the document.

Media Monitoring Africa's William Bird says that the resignation comes after some executive decisions for which Matthews must feel "profound regret".

Bird believes that debates over SABC's broadcast ban on violent protests, in addition to other internal disagreements, may have led to his resignation.

At least three SABC senior journalists were suspended after disagreeing with an instruction not to cover a protest.

He says that questions surrounding the credibility of the SABC have the potential to impact the municipal elections in August.
