TECHNOBYTE for 27 June 2016

On Technobyte this week we review the Lenovo X1 Yoga, we warn you of a new scam and gadget to add more storage to your iPhone

Tech support scammers have switched from cold calls to pop-ups ambushing users online, seemingly coming from the victims’ ISP. The messages, designed to look like they are legitimate warnings from the ISPs, usually say that the ISP’s system scans have detected malware on the users’ computer, and that the users’ personal documents, passwords, credit card information is at risk. Newer versions of the message also contain a threat: “If left unresolved, you may be subject to PERMANENT ACCOUNT SUSPENSION as well as possible fines for network damage.” A phone number has a prominent position in the message, and users are urged to phone in to contact the ISP’s certified technicians for assistance in cleaning up the machine. If they do, they’ll get in touch with the scammers, who will do their very best to trick the victims into allowing them to remotely access their computer and, consequently, have access to the victims’ sensitive information (passwords, bank account info, etc.).

This week I have been testing the new Lenovo X1 Yoga. This is the world’s lightest 14 inch 2-1 notebook. It is incredibly flexible and can be used as a tablet as well. It also has a stylus making it a great tool to use in presentations. It also features a 2K OLED display and has an option for a sim card with LTE capabilities.

We wouldn't blame you for thinking that the $4 Indian smartphone was just a pipe dream, but it's apparently quite real. Ringing Bells tells the Indian Express that its ultra low-cost Freedom 251 (named based on its price in rupees) will start shipping on June 30th, with nearly 200,000 units in the early batch. As before, the hardware is no great shakes. You're looking at a 4-inch 960 x 540 screen, a modest 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of memory, 8GB of expandable storage, an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 3.2-megapixel front cam -- it's even running Android 5.1 instead of 6.0. Price really is the selling point here.
