‘My 1st pay – R7 – went straight to my mom’ - famed mountaineer Sibusiso Vilane

27 June 2016 8:05 PM
Bruce Whitfield interviews mountaineer Sibusiso Vilane about his attitude to money (hopes and fears, successes and failures...)

The thought of not being able to meet my family’s financial needs scares me more than death itself.

Sibusiso Vilane

Each week The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviews a famous person about her or his attitude to money (hopes and fears, successes and failures, etc.) as part of his weekly “Make Money Mondays” feature.

This week he interviewed accomplished mountaineer Sibusiso Vilane.

Vilane has completed all Seven Summits, the highest mountains of each of the seven continents.

In 2007 Vilane and fellow mountaineer Alex Harris embarked on an unsupported and unassisted trek to reach the South Pole.

They completed the expedition on 17 January 2008, making Vilane and Harris the first South Africans to walk to the South Pole.

Scroll down for quotes from the audio below.

I never knew what money was until my grandmother sent me to buy groceries. I was probably about six or seven years old.

Sibusiso Vilane

I started herding cattle when I was seven.

Sibusiso Vilane

I started working when I was 14 years old.

Sibusiso Vilane

My first pay – it was R7 – went straight to my mother.

Sibusiso Vilane

You must work for money and use it wisely, because it’s scarce.

Sibusiso Vilane

When I started working as a game ranger – I was 22 - it was the first time I earned money that was my own to keep.

Sibusiso Vilane

I’m an investor. I’ve always invested. My mother instilled this attitude in me.

Sibusiso Vilane

Investing for my children’s education was the best money decision I’ve ever made.

Sibusiso Vilane

10 years ago I invested in property. I’m very proud of myself.

Sibusiso Vilane

My first investment was in shares.

Sibusiso Vilane

If I want to buy something I ask if it’s a ‘want’ or a ‘need’.

Sibusiso Vilane

I have no regrets about money.

Sibusiso Vilane

There’s a big gap between me and my children with regards to money. They won’t believe that my mother couldn’t give me 20 cents for the bus.
