Two suspected robbers crash into taxi during getaway killing five

Gauteng MEC for Safety Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane called 702's Xolani Gwala, to describe the scene of a terrible accident on the N3 North near Alberton.

Police were chasing two suspected robbers, and involved in a shoot out. The getaway vehicle crashed into a taxi and five people have died.

The eight wounded have been taken to hospitals around the city.

One of the suspects was shot by police and hit by a bullet from an R4 rifle. He is believed to be seriously wounded and may seek medical help.

The men were driving a stolen vehicle and it is believed to be the third in a series of house robberies.

Nkosi-Malobane says while two guns were found in the abandoned car, but they may still be armed and dangerous.

Names of victims will be released later today but you can call 10111 for further information.

The accident has caused delays on the N3 North and callers have phoned to say traffic is very congested.

People are urged to stay out of the emergency lane.
