SACP slams SABC for poor governance and failure to fulfill its public mandate

The South African Communist Party (SACP) has called on leadership at the SABC to change the editorial policy, culture and governance practices at the public broadcaster.

On Monday, Jimi Matthews resigned as acting CEO at the SABC, citing a corrosive atmosphere, three SABC senior journalists were suspended, and it emerged that another three could face suspension.

SACP spokesperson Alex Mashilo says that SABC managers are not the only ones to blame for the state of the SABC.

He added that board members have been unlawfully removed, by using outdated policies. The amended policies are still before Parliament.

The SACP has slammed the SABC for its alleged "personality cult", built on a populist policy centred around COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

At the same time, the ANC's national spokesperson Zizi Kodwa has criticised Matthews for his public resignation, and what he calls "spurious" comments about the public broadcaster.

He had all the channels to talk to the minister, board, to the management to raise issues about what he calls a 'corrosive atmosphere'. Was he guilty or party to that? He leaves us with questions.
