Rivers Church sermon was 'not meant to harm'

Rivers Church has defended Pastor Andre Olivier's racist comments, which saw the church trend for two days on social media.

The Sandton church came under fire after congregants took to Twitter to express their anger at "offensive" comments about black South Africans.

In the sermon, Olivier is heard saying: 'If you want to know why white people still got money, it's because they've worked', with small ripples of applause and chuckles heard from the congregation.

Below is the statement released on their website.

Listen to the full sermon from Sunday's 11am service below:

We've helped build this nation, we took nothing from no one. Maybe the law favoured us but we worked.

Pastor Andre Olivier, Rivers Church

When you tell me I need to share my wealth, what are you suggesting? Are you suggesting I give away some of it? Are you giving away any of yours away? Excuse me?

Pastor Andre Olivier, Rivers Church

Let's not talk nonsense, let's not get emotional and think irrationally... Let's understand the pain and history of it.
