STIs are most common cause of urethritis, says uroligist

Urethritis is a condition in which the urethra, or the tube that carries urine from the bladder, becomes inflamed and irritated.

According to recent figures released by the Department of Health, estimated 319 766 males have been treated for male urethritis syndrome in the past year alone.

According to uroligist Dr Shingai Mutambirwa, sexually transmitted infections are by far the most common cause of Urethritis.

Dr Shingai says most people request that they be put on antibiotics when they have been exposed to the possibility of sexual transmitted infections. He says this is the wrong way of going about it, as it can lead to an overuse of antibiotics, when not always needed.

Even if you have been exposed to possibilities of sexually transmitted infections, we don't treat patients unless you have symptoms because antibiotics wont work until the bacteria has started to divide.

It only works for bacteria and for chlamydia, not for viruses

Dr Shingai Mutambirwa, Urologist

He cautions people when taking antibiotics for viruses, because we are in an era where we getting 'super bacterial resistance'

We need to prove bacterial infection before getting on treatment, even when it comes to Urethritis, which is usually bacterial

Dr Shingai Mutambirwa, Urologist

Although we often do what we call syndromic treatment for Urethritis, where a guy would start having a discharge or irritation when passing urine, and we just put him on antibiotics, we are recognizing there is a lot of resistance to this as well.
