EFF pulls back on Rivers Church visit

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says it no longer intends to visit Rivers Church in Sandton after Pastor Andre Olivier apologised for the hurt and offence caused by his controversial comments during a sermon on Sunday.

Spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said:“When such racism rears its ugly head you must go and deal with it, if the church will not deal with it, so that’s what we were doing. We have since been in the process of demobilizing because he has apologized and because it’s a matter of the pulpit surely he will be repenting and they must then pray for him on Sunday.”

While he insists that disciplinary action must be taken by the church Ndlozi says they have shifted their focus on to the Sodwana Bay Guest House in Kwazulu Natal.

Despite facing backlash from social media users, actor Tumisho Masha who attended the controversial sermon says Olivier is not racist.

“I have gotten quite a lot of tweets, most of them very angry people who hadn’t heard the sermon nor had they really understood anything but want to weigh in, be really insulting and say some really disparaging things, but its ok.”

I could tell that there were some things that he said that were controversial. Pastor Andre says things sometimes that are controversial for both black and white people. There have been many instances where he has actually asked a lot of the congregants to leave the church in terms of white people who didn’t believe that black people should join the church.

The way the church stands now in terms of demographics there is majority black people in the congregation… but that is the direction that the church is taking so I don’t understand how one Sunday morning he can wake up and just be totally racist.
