The Friday Stand-In 2016

#FridayStandIn: Anti-apartheid activist Kumi Naidoo

Director of Africa Civil Society Centre, Kumi Naidoo, is a South African human rights activist. He became involved in the struggle against apartheid at the age of 15.

While he was living in exile in England, Naidoo studied at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes scholar. He eventually earned a D.Phil in political sociology.

Naidoo's leadership on socio-economic, gender and environmental issues has seen him occupy positions such as Executive Director for Greenpeace International.

He was the Secretary General and Chief Executive Officer of CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation, and founding Chair of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP).

Naidoo also served as a board member of the Association for Women’s Rights in Development.

This dedicated social justice activist and leader was the first African to head Greenpeace, an international environmental organisation.

Last year, he decided to step down form his position at Greenpeace, and return to South Africa to help us transition to a clean renewable energy future.
