How to check your mental health is intact

In the crazy world we live in, how is it possible to remain mentally healthy or ‘mentally normal’? What is the meaning of mental normality? Dr Schomer takes us through this difficult complex journey towards mental normality.

Dr Schomer says he uses the indices released by the National Association of mental Health in the USA,. he says it provides one of the best definitions of what mental health is and is not.

Schomer asks do you know if you are a good friend/parent/mate/worker/citizen? The answer may give you a sense of your level of metal well being.

When looking at your intra-personal relationship, he suggests 6 important check-ins that are signs of mental health:

  1. The ability to understand your own emotions
  2. Maintaining a sense of humour
  3. Good self-esteem
  4. Healthy self respect
  5. feeling worthwhile
  6. Enjoying life

When looking at your inter-personal relationships, answer the following questions:

  1. Are you able to give and receive love?
  2. Are you able to trust others and be trustworthy?
  3. Do you feel a sense of belonging?
  4. Do you respect yourself and others?
  5. Do you accept social responsibilities? Do you use your talents and capabilities effectively?

Indices of mental life: Being able to face and deal with everyday problems, being able to adjust to change, and having a sense of excitement about your life.

Schomer says mental health needs to be worked on every day. We are like a car and we need to take care of ourselves to keep running smoothly.

We know when we have an energy bound machine, like a car, if we don't put in petrol, it stops sooner or later. if we don't replace the brake pads, we will run into other cars, we will cause havoc.

Schomer says a warning sign is if you feel you are constantly living in a household of negativity.

When you constantly only see the bad, warning signs, warning signs, warning signs.
