Local business reacts to spread of xenophobic looting to Alex:
EWN Correspondent Masego Rahlaga on this story: Local businesspeople in Alexandra have come out in support of foreign shop owners in their area, pleading for a stop to looting and violence. For more than a week now, foreign business owners have been targeted in areas including Soweto, Kagiso and Langlaagte, six people have died. On Sunday night community members tried to loot a foreign owned shop in Alexandra but police rushed to the scene and managed to disperse the crowd.
No clear end in sight for Eskom maintenance backlog:
EWN Correspondent Emily Corke on this story: Eskom still has a major backlog of maintenance to carry out which means load shedding is here to stay. There are warnings that Eskom still has a major backlog of maintenance to carry out which means stage three load shedding will be a reality for the foreseeable future. On Monday, the power utility implemented stage two load shedding citing technical problems and a constrained grid. Energy expert Chris Yelland says planned maintenance done during the festive season was simply not enough, as Eskom didn’t shed enough load when the demand was low. Yelland says the cash-strapped utility was unable to do the necessary maintenance to prepare for the industrial year to begin.
