Has Bill Gates gone mad, or can chickens wipe out extreme poverty?

Celebrated philanthropist Bill Gates’ most recent campaign is, well, out of the norm.

Gates will donate 100 000 chickens to very poor countries, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa.

He says his donations will boost incomes because chickens are inexpensive to care for.

According to Gates, a farmer starting with five hens (if they breed to 40 chicks) could earn $1000 a year.

He acknowledged that some might scoff at his plan, but insisted that he believes it will have an impact.

“It sounds funny,” Gates wrote on the project’s website. “But I mean it when I say that I am excited about chickens.”
